Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, has been relatively absent from the spotlight since wrapping up their last tour for their 2006 record Taking The Long Way. That album, as we remember, won them five Grammy awards and contained the response to outcry against Natalie’s comments against then-president Bush for being from their home state Texas. Since then, the two sisters Martie and Emily, recorded an album under the band name the Court Yard Hounds which followed in a similar style to that last Dixie Chicks album but more folky.

Late last year, Natalie revealed that she would be releasing a solo record which is scheduled out in May and titled Mother. Today, Natalie’s cover of Pink Floyd‘s song Mother is available on iTunes as part of the compilation West of Memphis: Voices For Justice. The song can be heard on npr.org. It’s likely the song will also serve as the title track of her solo album.

No word yet on recorded material from the Dixie Chicks but they will be doing a few festival stops this spring and summer so perhaps it’s only a matter of time.
