Grammy nominations: How did I do (2014-15 edition)

On Friday, the Grammy nominations were unveiled over the early part of the day while the big finale, the reveal for Album of the Year, was done on primetime.

Prior to the nominations unveiling, I predicted who I thought would make the Big-4 categories. How did I do?

Album of the Year

Beyoncé albumI predicted
Beyoncé – Beyoncé
Ed Sheeran – X
Pharrell Williams – G I R L
Sam Smith – In The Lonely Hour
Soundtrack – Frozen

The nominations
Beck – Morning Phase
Beyoncé – Beyoncé
Ed Sheeran – X
Pharrell Williams – G I R L
Sam Smith – In The Lonely Hour

My score
Four stars

Surprises
The inclusion of Beck probably isn’t as surprising as the absence of Frozen. While a soundtrack hasn’t been nominated in this category for nearly two decades, I did expect Frozen to be nominated as it had the extreme popularity, sales and it was generally well-liked. Either way, Beck is a dark horse here but isn’t particularly out of place in this category.

Record of the Year

Taylor Swift - 1989I predicted
Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea – Problem
Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z – Drunk In Love
Idina Menzel – Let It Go
Meghan Trainer – All About That Bass
Sam Smith – Stay With Me

The nominations
Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX – Fancy
Meghan Trainer – All About That Bass
Sam Smith – Stay With Me
Sia – Chandelier
Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

My score
Two Stars

Surprises
The biggest surprise is the Beyoncé snub but seeing Sia was a pleasant make-up. Not feeling the Fancy inclusion.

Song Of The Year

Sia - 1000 Forms Of Fear

I predicted
Coldplay – A Sky Full Of Stars
Ed Sheeran – Don’t
Idina Menzel – Let It Go
Sam Smith – Stay With Me
Sia – Chandelier

The nominations
Hozier – Take Me To Church
Meghan Trainer – All About That Bass
Sam Smith – Stay With Me
Sia – Chandelier
Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

My score
Two Stars

Surprises
This category is always a stab in the dark for me so the surprise here is that I got 2/5. Even still, I should know better as four of the five songs from Record of the Year are repeats here. The other big surprise was the recognition of Hozier, who I didn’t think would get noticed as Take Me To Church is still relatively new to the mainstream – despite being out for almost a year – and it’s subject matter may be a bit… off colour perhaps. Also a bit off colour is the nomination of Shake It Off. Catchy song but for a lyrically-based award?

Best New Artist

Brandy Clark - 12 Stories

I predicted
Aloe Blacc
Bastille
Iggy Azalea
Kongos
Sam Smith

The nominations
Bastille
Brandy Clark
HAIM
Iggy Azalea
Sam Smith

My score
Three stars

Surprises
I was excited to see Brandy Clark nominated for this one, as well as Country Album of the Year for 12 Stories. She’s a bright spot in an otherwise dismal genre right now so it’s nice she became the token country artist for this category this year. Otherwise, I wasn’t sure whether HAIM would make it as I assumed they were submitted last year and just didn’t make it (I did guess them as one of my picks last year, and mentioned them again as a contender this year as well but ultimately didn’t include them.)
