Mike Posner – At Night, Alone

Mike Posner - At Night AloneMike Posner was poised to be a big name in pop music at the start of the decade after his breakout hit Cooler Than Me and collaborations with Big Sean and Lil’Wayne, but then he sort of fell off, popping up only in the songwriting credits of hits by Maroon 5 and Justin Bieber. His comeback hit I Took A Pill In Ibiza explains his situation, chronicling his life after finding success and the subsequent decision to step back from the spotlight. The song – like over half of At Night, Alone – is available in the original folk-pop version and a remix, telling of his recklessness with money, love and general wellbeing. His cutting honesty and alluring voice draw an easy comparison to English singer/songwriter Passenger while making for a distinct song, but once that’s out in the open, he rarely steps beyond it. He notes throughout the record how his life changed after finding fame, which clearly made him uncomfortable and unhappy, while channeling where his heart does lie, mainly with his family, Detroit and songwriting. It’s not particularly compelling material, and while there are catchy melodies to potentially carry the record beyond the first hit, it’s not enough to leave a lasting impression. At Night, Alone shows a more vibrant Mike, but beyond Ibiza, his voice and story, there isn’t much else that makes him stand out.
