Vance Joy – Nation Of Two

Vance Joy - Nation Of TwoVance Joy‘s second album Nation Of Two is packed full of familiar melodies and songs about love and a relationship. He holds on to the folky guitar pop sound of his debut Dream Your Life Away, occasionally adding layers of guitars and backing vocals to vary it a little but he shines brightest on the album’s lighter textures. Songs like the ballad highlight I’m With You, the mid-tempo of We’re Going Home, and the opening track Call If You Need Me are welcoming. What this album lacks is the cut-throat relate-ability of his first. Nation Of Two falls into a routine of focusing mainly on relationships but keeps the lyrics too general to make the song your own. If songs like Red Eye and From Afar from the last record are any indication, Joy’s voice is made for songs made just for you. Nation Of Two is a safe second effort. While it’s unlikely to win anyone over who passed on his first album, it shouldn’t lose anyone either.
