GRAMMY NOMINATIONS: HOW DID I DO? (2019)

On Friday, the nominations for the Grammy Awards came out and there were some surprises. First surprise, I actually think I did better than last year overall, where I got 1/5 in Record of the Year and 0/5 for Song of the Year but 3/5 for both Album of the Year and Best New Artist. This year, I made correct guesses for the majority with the exception of Best New Artist. Let’s take a look!

Album of the Year

My Predictions The Nominations
Ariana Grande – Sweetener
Brandi Carlile – By The Way, I Forgive You
Cardi B. – Invasion of Privacy Cardi B. – Invasion of Privacy
Drake – Scorpion Drake – Scorpion
H.E.R. – H.E.R.
Janelle Monáe – Dirty Computer Janelle Monáe – Dirty Computer
Jack White – Boarding House Reach
Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour Kacey Musgraves – Golden Hour
Post Malone – Beerbongs & Bentleys
Soundtrack – Black Panther Soundtrack – Black Panther
Taylor Swift – Reputation
5/8

Brandi Carlile - By The Way, I Forgive YouMy biggest surprise was the inclusion of Brandi Carlile. Other surprises included the omission of both Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, the lack of a rock or alternative album, and the seemingly out-of-nowhere nomination for R&B artist H.E.R., whose self-titled album was released in October 2017 and peaked at #47 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Record of the Year

My Predictions The Nominations
Ariana Grande – God Is A Woman
Brandi Carlile – The Joke
Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin – I Like It Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin – I Like It
Childish Gambino – This Is America Childish Gambino – This Is America
Drake – God’s Plan Drake – God’s Plan
Kacey Musgraves – High Horse
Kendrick Lamar & SZA – All The Stars Kendrick Lamar & SZA – All The Stars
Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – Shallow Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – Shallow
Post Malone featuring 21 Savage – Rockstar
Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey – The Middle Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey – The Middle
6/8

A Star Is BornNot as many surprises with this category with the exception of Brandi’s nomination. Kacey’s snub serves as slightly unexpected as she was the frontrunner for country so voters who lean toward the genre may opt for Shallow, The Joke or give their vote to Maren Morris and The Middle.

Song of the Year

My Predictions The Nominations
Ariana Grande – No Tears Left To Cry
Brandi Carlile – The Joke
Childish Gambino – This Is America Childish Gambino – This Is America
Chris Stapleton – Broken Halos
Drake – God’s Plan Drake – God’s Plan
Ella Mai – Boo’d Up Ella Mai – Boo’d Up
Kacey Musgraves – High Horse
Kendrick Lamar & SZA – All The Stars Kendrick Lamar & SZA – All The Stars
Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – Shallow Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – Shallow
Shawn Mendes – In My Blood
Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey – The Middle
5/8

Childish GambinoIt seems I’ve overestimated country for the songwriters’ award as the Grammys opted not to include any country songs, but somehow found a way to include The Middle in this category. Surprises include the aforementioned The Joke and Shawn Mendes, whose only other nomination was Best Pop Vocal Album.
As expected, both Record and Song of the Year categories show a lot of duplicates with 6 out of 8 titles appearing in both. (I’m also impressed that I managed to place singularly nominated Boo’d Up and I Like It in the correct categories!)

Best New Artist

My Predictions The Nominations
Bebe Rexha Bebe Rexha
Chloe X Halle
Ella Mai
Dua Lipa Dua Lipa
Greta Van Fleet Greta Van Fleet
H.E.R.
Jorja Smith
Juice Wrld
Kane Brown
Luke Combs
Margo Price
Marshmello
Troye Sivan
3/8

The biggest surprise to me for this category was that I got 3 right as it was mostly a stab in the dark.

The awards take place February 10, 2019. Before then, I will once again try my hand at predicting the winners of some of the key categories!
