Predictions: 2020 Grammy Nominations

GrammyAs the Recording Academy continues its efforts to update and improve the Grammy Awards, the upcoming award nominations are about to be announced a month earlier than usual. This year, the Grammy’s had a shorter period of eligibility as the Academy made some adjustments to the scheduling and the awards in the new year will take place in January, rather than February. These changes come on the heels of the increase of nominees from 5 to 8 for the main four categories, and this year will be the first year of the awards under new president of the Recording Academy Deborah Dugan, the first woman at the head of the Academy. How will all of this affect the nominees? Who really knows? But I’m going to attempt to predict the main four categories:

Album of the Year

There are four frontrunners for this category: Ariana Grande; Billie Eilish; Lizzo; and the soundtrack to A Star Is Born, leaving the remaining four slots open. Those could be filled by Beyoncé (Homecoming), Chance The Rapper (The Big Day), Khalid (High Spirit), Lana Del Rey (Norman Fucking Rockwell), Maren Morris (Girl) and Taylor Swift (Lover), among other possibilities. Despite past love for Queen Bey, I don’t see her among this year’s list. Chance could fill the rap bill. Maren could represent country. LDR could very well be this year’s wildcard with her acclaimed album, and Taylor may sneak in with Lover. I predict:

Ariana Grande – thank u, next
Billie Eilish – when we all fall asleep, where do we go?
Chance the Rapper – The Big Day
Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
Lana Del Rey – Norman Fucking Rockwell
Lizzo – Cuz I Love You
Maren Morris – Girl
Taylor Swift – Lover

Record of the Year

This category is generally the easiest to predict as it leans more toward bigger hits or well-known songs, with a couple of exceptions every year. It’s those exceptions that are tough to predict because they could come from the Maggie Rogers, Lana Del Reys, or J. Coles of the musical underworld. The safe picks are Ariana Grande (7 Rings), Billie Eilish (bad guy), and Lizzo (Truth Hurts), with the next likely nominees to include Lil Nas X with Billy Ray Cyrus (Old Town Road), Post Malone with Swae Lee (Sunflower), Shawn Mendes with Camila Cabello (Señorita), and perhaps wishful thinking on my part, but Lady Gaga (Always Remember Us This Way). That would leave the dark horse slot, which I could see going to either Taylor Swift (You Need To Calm Down) or Maren Morris (Girl). I predict:

Ariana Grande – 7 Rings
Billie Eilish – bad guy
Lady Gaga – Always Remember Us This Way
Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road
Lizzo – Truth Hurts
Post Malone & Swae Lee – Sunflower
Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello – Señorita
Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down

Song of the Year

Song of the Year is the songwriters’ award, and quite often comes close to mirroring the Record of the Year category. I don’t see any reason to expect any different, with a couple of exceptions: Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift both submitted different titles to each category, thank u, next and Lover respectively. Beyond them, I could see Lady Gaga, Lizzo and Post Malone with Swae Lee also doubling up in both categories, but with the same songs as Record of the Year. That leaves three spots for the underdogs, which I will list as Lewis Capaldi (Someone You Loved), Maren Morris (Girl) and Sam Smith with Normani (Dancing With A Stranger). I predict:

Ariana Grande – thank u, next (songwriters: Ariana Grande, Victoria Monét, Tayla Parx, Njomza Vitia, Kimberly Krysiuk, Tommy Brown, Michael Foster, Charles Anderson)
Lady Gaga – Always Remember Us This Way (songwriters: Lady Gaga, Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna)
Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved (songwriters: Lewis Capaldi, Samuel Romans, Thomas Barnes, Peter Kelleher, Benjamin Kohn)
Lizzo – Truth Hurts (songwriters: Melissa Jefferson, Eric Frederic, Jesse Saint John, Steven Cheung, Mina Lioness)
Maren Morris – Girl (songwriters: busbee, Maren Morris, Greg Kurstin)
Post Malone & Swae Lee – Sunflower (songwriters: Austin Post, Khalif Brown, Scott Lang, Billy Walsh, Louis Bell)
Sam Smilth & Normani – Dancing With A Stranger (songwriters: Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes, Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Hermansen, Normani Kordei Hamilton)
Taylor Swift – Lover (songwriter: Taylor Swift)

Best New Artist

This year was a particularly big year for artists establishing themselves on the bigger stage. In Grammy terms, both Lizzo and Billie Eilish are new artists, and of course are shoo-ins for this category, while Maggie Rogers is a sure bet. Other artists to strike it big in 2019 include Lewis Capaldo, Lil Nas X and Juice WRLD, who may also pick up a nomination. Tyler Childers may be the sole country rep while Megan Thee Stallion will continue her rise with the final nom. I predict:

Billie Eilish
Juice WRLD
Lewis Capaldi
Lil Nas X
Maggie Rogers
Megan Thee Stallion
Tyler Childers
