Here is my list of my favourite songs of the 90s. This list was VERY difficult to make mainly because there are a ton of great songs to come from the period and, of course, taking 100 songs from a period of 10 years is tough to do. I actually had to edit the list at least a dozen times because there were a few songs and artists that I accidentally left out that I felt deserved a spot in here.
Essentially, this list consists of songs that I loved back when they were currents, however, since I just made the list, they're obviously songs I still love so in order to have made this list, the song needed to stand the basic test of time. I tried to be retrospective when making this list and not to let my present opinion overtake how much I loved the songs back in the day as well. Now, there are a few songs on here that I didn't fully love until fairly recently (when the 90s ended). I figured I'd include them too because they are 90s songs. So basically, this list is my favourite songs of the 90s that I still love but that I also liked a lot when they were current. I feel this list is pretty accurate as it stands now but is always up for edits.
This list is very central-90s based. I got into music in 1994 in a period I will often refer to as my personal "dawn of music" so there's only a handful of songs before that and there also aren't a lot from 1999 as a lot of them trickled over into 2000 and I wanted to keep it as much as I could limited to songs that are known for being from the 90s.
| 100 | Celine Dion ![]() |
| Where Does My Heart Beat Now1990 | |
The top 100 starts off with one of the artists that had a LOT of great songs in the mid 90s. Actually, I would consider Celine Dion my favourite singer from my onset of musicmania in 1994 until late 1996/early 1997. This was one of her best and was her first major single from 1990. |
|
| 99 | Foo Fighters |
| Big Me1996 | |
I think most people remember this song for the video, me likewise. It had such a fun video, which was essentially a 3 minute commercial but it was still cool. I like this song because it's pretty much a very laid-back rock song that does what it has to do from the beginning until it ends. |
|
| 98 | Freedy Johnson |
| Bad Reputation1995 | |
This song was from a one-hit-wonder from 1995 who I think could have been John Mayer before John Mayer became himself, if that makes any sense. This was a light rock song that would still fit in today as it doesn't really sound dated in any sense, well, a bit. |
|
| 97 | Third Eye Blind |
| Jumper1998 | |
This song is about talking a friend out of suicide. I didn't quite get the song itself until a few years later but I still listen to it once in a while as the only 3EB song that gets regular spins from me. |
|
| 96 | Sarah McLachlan ![]() |
| Possession1994 | |
I've liked Sarah's songs since about 1995 but didn't really pick up on them as favourites until much much later, like earlier this decade. This is one of the more recent ones that I've discovered I loved. Of course I liked it for awhile but it was never on the forefront of Sarah songs I like but I do think this is a defining song from the first half of her career. |
|
| 95 | Melissa Etheridge |
| Your Little Secret1995 | |
This song had quite a risqué video that I'm surprised I don't remember hearing it being a big deal back in late 1995. It was Melissa's first single from a new album following her new mainstream success that came with Yes I An and she's rockin' on this track! |
|
| 94 | Hootie And The Blowfish |
| Only Wanna Be With You1995 | |
Hootie & the Blowfish were the thing back in 1995. They were EVERYWHERE! This song was easily the best of their string of hits that also included other pretty good songs like Old Man And Me and Hold My Hand, great for nostalgic purposes. |
|
| 93 | Weezer |
| Buddy Holly1995 | |
Another song with a great video. Of course, this was the one that looked as if it were filmed on the set of Happy Days, a very creative and interesting video for sure. The song itself is a great rock song that was the start of what would become a cult-following for Weezer. |
|
| 92 | Melanie Doane ![]() |
| Adam's Rib1998 | |
Melanie came around in late 1998, coming from Nova Scotia. This song remains her signature song and the title track to her first major-label album. She was actually the first singer I ever met in person during a stop at the shopping mall before the East Coast Music Awards. I later got her CD and this song became one of my favourites. |
|
| 91 | Celine Dion ![]() |
| It's All Coming Back To Me Now1996 | |
This song is easily one of Celine's greatests as it follows a similar dramatic formula that Meatloaf used a lot as well, of course it was written by his songwriter Jim Steinman. From start to finish, this Celine song has it all and she sounds her best in it too. I love both the 5 and a half minute version and the full 7:33 version. |
|
| 90 | Natalie Imbruglia |
| Smoke1998 | |
It was Torn that put Natalie Imbruglia on the map, becoming one of the biggest hits of the 90s but it is Smoke that I'll always go back to when I want to hear anything by Natalie now. To me, this song is reminiscent to Dido's best song Here With Me. Both are haunting with partially ambient-electronic influences to them. I liked the simple video this song had as well. |
|
| 89 | Corrs |
| Runaway1995 | |
The Corrs became one of the biggest groups from Ireland in the 90s but this was their first single. They had a few more good songs in the 90s as well, which was when their streak of good songs essentially ended but the material from their first album will always be their best, with this single at the top of the list. |
|
| 88 | Yaki-Da |
| I Saw You Dancing1995 | |
Produced by Jonas Berggren of Ace of Base, this group sounded quite similar to them. This song had some eastern influences but was very pop/dance based and was a hit in 1995. Very one-hit-wonder but still great to listen to occasionally. |
|
| 87 | Natalie Merchant |
| Wonder1996 | |
Former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant, who released her first solo album in 1995. She had three Top 10s from it. I liked Wonder the most because, unlike Carnival it was much more catchier and upbeat and quite positive. I honestly don't know if I can say that it is better overall though. |
|
| 86 | Enigma |
| Return To Innocence1994 | |
Everyone can remember this odd new wave song from 1994 by Enigma. Most might find it extremely annoying but I quite liked it and still do. Reminds me of the summer of 94. |
|
| 85 | Cranberries |
| Salvation1996 | |
I remember the radio station I listened to did an album release for To The Faithful Departed in 1996 and this song got a lot of airplay there initially as well. A very short song and much harder than anything the Cranberries had done before but still very short, sweet and awesome! |
|
| 84 | Tori Amos |
| Crucify1992 | |
I don't quite know for sure when this song was a single but I personally got into it in about 1997. Very pop-sounding for Tori but still contains lyrics and themes that she has become known for. It remains one of my favourites from her. |
|
| 83 | Crash Test Dummies ![]() |
| The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead1995 | |
Around the time this song came out, I was somewhat obsessed with the Crash Test Dummies. I was loving the singles from their album God Shuffled His Feet and along comes this song from the Dumb And Dumber soundtrack that I also had to have, which became the fourth CD I ever owned. (GSHF was the second!) This song became an obsession for me as well for quite some time. I remember playing it multiple times a day and blasting the volume whenever it would come on the radio. |
|
| 82 | Whigfield |
| Another Day1995 | |
From the 9th (?) CD I ever owned came this song, another brief obsession. I actually quite liked Whigfield and I really liked this song. A very-highly-rotated song for me in the summer of 1995 and it would be one of the biggest hits for me that year. I know her biggest worldwide hit was Saturday Night but this was the one that did it for me. |
|
| 81 | Heart |
| Will You Be There (In The Morning)1994 | |
I didn't realize how many Heart songs I actually liked back when I liked this song but I eventually got a compilation CD with some of their biggest hits a few years later and this song was on it. I'm always partial to music from 1994 since that was the dawn of music for me and this song comes from then so it will always be special to me. |
|
| 80 | Melissa Etheridge |
| I'm The Only One1995 | |
I remember this song spending endless amounts of weeks on the Top 40 countdowns back in 1995 so I did get really burnt out on it but now I'm over it and I really appreciate Melissa Etheridge as a musician. This is another one of her bests and one of the 90s bests for sure. |
|
| 79 | Celine Dion ![]() |
| If You Asked Me To1993 | |
It was tough for me to choose a favourite Celine song but ultimately, I chose this one from her second english album. I always favoured Celine's early english songs over the recent songs, so everything pre My Heart Will Go On. This song was actually on my very first mixed tape I made in the summer of 1994. |
|
| 78 | Ace Of Base |
| Beautiful Life1995 | |
Following the massive success of The Sign (the album) came this track, the first release from their second CD The Bridge. I remember being really excited about this song and really loving it. It was a great poppy upbeat bouncy dance song with a very catchy chorus. I loved it! |
|
| 77 | Our Lady Peace ![]() |
| Naveed1996 | |
Another band who were in the prime in the mid 90s. I wasn't sure whether I should choose Naveed, which really brings me back to early 95, or Clumsy, which is a more recent favourite of mine but ultimately I went with Naveed. The video is crazy and the song is rockin'. OLP never did as good as they did with this since. |
|
| 76 | Damhnait Doyle ![]() |
| List Of Things1996 | |
I remember hearing this on the radio when it came out and then I later found out Damhnait was from Newfoundland and I was thinking "this is too good to come from a Newfoundlander." LOL! Either way, this song is awesome and one of the first songs by Canadian women that I liked... who knew it was the start of something for me? |
|
| 75 | Britney Spears |
| ...Baby, One More Time1999 | |
It seems weird for me to associate this song with the 90s since it came so late in the decade but it is a 1999 song thru and thru and even though I'm not the biggest Britney fan, this song is pop music at it's best! |
|
| 74 | Loreena McKennitt ![]() |
| The Mummer's Dance1998 | |
When this song became a hit, I found it so odd because I always associated Loreena with making traditional-sounding music as opposed to new wave pop but this song crossed over and was a hit. Possibly because of the interesting sounding beat it had that was undeniably noticable and catchy. |
|
| 73 | Oasis |
| Campaign Supernova1996 | |
I really don't like Oasis but I did like a few of their songs from this period in the 90s, with Champaign Supernova being my favourite. It's very mellow and I really liked the video. Simple but effective. |
|
| 72 | Matchbox Twenty |
| 3AM1997 | |
I was hard pressed to choose Real World over 3am but when I thought about it, this song really is an awesome song! It got alittle overplayed back in 1997 but since that has worn down, I can now appreciate this one again. |
|
| 71 | Sinead O'Connor |
| Nothing Compares 2 U1990 | |
It might be a bit cliché for me to include this amongst my lists but I actually do really like this song. I don't know much else from Sinead and I know this was like #1 for the entire year (1990) but I think this is a case where being a big hit = being a good song. |
|
| 70 | Gin Blossoms |
| Allison Road1995 | |
Gin Blossoms were huge from 1993-1996 but this song was easily their best. I quite like Found Out About You and Until I Fall Away as well but this is the song that I think of when I think of the Gin Blossoms. Awesome song! |
|
| 69 | Ben Folds Five |
| Brick1997 | |
I didn't like this song a lot when it was a current but in the last couple of years, with my music tastes evolving toward what they are now, this song fits in with my tastes now compared to my tastes back in 1997. I really like this song and how it tells the story of an abortion. It's very heart wrenching. |
|
| 68 | Crash Test Dummies ![]() |
| Afternoons And Coffeespoons1994 | |
This was the song that got me into the Crash Test Dummies. I always loved how it started with the acoustic guitar and then Brad Robert's baritone voice in the first verse just going right at it. It's so 1994 and I love it! |
|
| 67 | Toad The Wet Sprocket |
| Something's Always Wrong1994 | |
Another favourite of mine from 1994. I don't know really what it is about this song but it reminds me of a major snowstorm from late 1994 that knocked out power for almost a week. I remember hearing this song in the car during that time. I just love the intro and the ending of it. |
|
| 66 | Sophie B. Hawkins |
| Only Love (The Ballad Of Sleeping Beauty)1996 | |
I got Sophie's CD when this song was just hitting radio and the version on the album wasn't as exciting as the radio version but either way, I really loved it and now that I've gotten hold of the radio version again, I can appreciate it once more. Very poppy but still my favourite from her. |
|
| 65 | Garth Brooks |
| Hard Luck Woman1994 | |
I've never been a big fan of Garth Brooks and when it comes to this song, KISS either but this was one of the songs I heard in the days of the dawn of music for me. Hearing it over ten years later, I realized that Garth actually did a great job with this song. Kudos to KISS for making it and Garth Brooks for bringing it back! |
|
| 64 | Cranberries |
| Linger1994 | |
The Cranberries, like the Crash Test Dummies, were one of the first bands that I really loved when I first got into music. Unlike the CTD, I continued to like the Cranberries and eventually got four of their albums. This song in particular was one of the ones I always liked and it brings me back to 1994 whenever I hear it. |
|
| 63 | Green Day |
| Basket Case1994 | |
I was never a big fan of Green Day nor this song. I thought they were juvenile and for the most part, thought their songs were disposible. Along comes the days of American Idiot and then I start playing this song a bit more and now I really quite like it! It's a great alternative rock song, short and sweet! |
|
| 62 | Roxette |
| Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)1991 | |
Before I "officially" got into music, there were songs that I heard and liked a lot from when I was younger. Songs by Roxette definately apply here and this song was one of my favourites from that time. |
|
| 61 | Shawn Colvin |
| Sunny Came Home1997 | |
This song doesn't really hold any special memories for me from the time it was a current but I did like it all the same. There's not a lot of other songs by Shawn Colvin that I really like but this one is one that is dependable whenever I'm in the mood for 90s music. |
|
| 60 | Pretenders |
| I'll Stand By You1994 | |
I wonder if this song qualifies for "classic" status being by a band whose other songs get that title, even if this one isn't really that old. I know some people associate this as being older than it is and that's probably because it sounds like it could be from the 80s or the 90s but in a sense, it's almost timeless. An awesome song either way though! |
|
| 59 | Jann Arden ![]() |
| Wonderdrug1995 | |
Not one of Jann's most known songs but it was a radio hit for her following songs like Good Mother and Insensitive. This one didn't suffer overplay like those ones arguably did but when asked what my favourite Jann song is, this one is definately a contender. |
|
| 58 | Chantal Kreviazuk ![]() |
| Leaving On A Jet Plane1998 | |
This song came out around the time when I was still discovering Chantal and her music. She hadn't yet "officially" become my favourite singer but this song quickly became one of my favourites from 1998 nonetheless. There was still the novelty that I loved her music and she was still relatively unknown and this song helped push her into a more popular status. I got uber sick of it after awhile but it's still one of my favourites. |
|
| 57 | Tori Amos |
| Silent All These Years1992 | |
I somewhat discovered Tori Amos around 1997 when my sister borrowed a few of her CDs from a friend and I recorded some songs from them onto a tape. This was one of them and I remember liking it a bit from the start, it was never on the forefront of music I liked. I didn't really listen to it again until a few years ago and since my music tastes are much different than they were back then, this song suits me much more now than it did back then so I can't punish myself for not liking it much back then. I think it's an awesome song and I love the climax near the end. There are no real memories of this song to bring me back to 1997 but I guess what I've just said about it here is enough, eh? |
|
| 56 | Pearl Jam |
| Betterman1995 | |
While not a big Pearl Jam fan, I do like a few of their songs. This one is one of them, obviously, lol. I don't know what to say about this song without being repetative other than it reminds me of 1995. lol |
|
| 55 | Dixie Chicks |
| You Were Mine1999 | |
The Dixie Chicks were nothing special on my list of favourite artists ever back in the late 90s. I wasn't really into country music but I always had a place for them in my music playlists. This song in particular from their first album is quite good and tells a realistic story about a divorce so it is very relatable to a lot of people, for sure. Not me though but I just think it's a great song and it really captures the feelings of the story. |
|
| 54 | Everything But The Girl |
| Missing1996 | |
This is another song that I liked at the time but not really loved. Even now it's not a song that I attribute to the 90s because it sounds like it could have come from any point in time in the last 15 years or so but nonetheless, it is a great song with sombre vocals over a dance beat. |
|
| 53 | Alanis Morissette ![]() |
| Joining You1999 | |
This song should have been the huge hit from Alanis' second album. I don't understand why it was never promoted in North America. Either way, I think it's the best song from her second album and among the best she's recorded. |
|
| 52 | Fiona Apple |
| Criminal1997 | |
I love the uneasiness in this song and how Fiona just lays it all out in the verses. This song is her "you oughta know" and luckily, it was the one to give her some popularity. Definately one of the best of the 90s! |
|
| 51 | R.E.M. |
| What's The Frequency, Kenneth?1994 | |
R.E.M. were quite big back in the mid 90s and this was one of the bigger hits they had. Whenever I want to hear an R.E.M. song, it's always this one and this is definately a song that I attribute to 1994 all the way. |
|
| 50 | Spacehog |
| In The Meantime1996 | |
I remember really liking this song and video back in late 1996 when it came out. Muchmusic played it a lot and although it didn't become a big hit, I still did hear it quite a bit. And then I didn't hear it again until early in the 2000s. A great song! |
|
| 49 | Paula Cole |
| Me1998 | |
Paula Cole is more known for Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? and I Don't Want To Wait but it is Me that I always considered my favourite from her. I don't know why but this song always had a more genuine sound to it than the others did. It probably didn't help that I Don't Want To Wait was used for every tv drama and movie for the next two years. |
|
| 48 | Corona |
| Rhythm Of The Night1995 | |
This was one of those dance songs that hung around forever during a time when dance music was all over the radio. I don't really have much to say about this one. lol |
|
| 47 | Live |
| Lightening Crashes1995 | |
This song is the one that Live is most known for. It's a slower rock song that picks up near the end and is known for both its video and the subject matter. When most of their other material gets stuck in time, this song continues to travel, lol. |
|
| 46 | Duncan Sheik |
| Barely Breathing1997 | |
Essentially a one-hit-wonder from 1997 with an awesome song that I think is more suitable to my musical tastes now than it was back then but needless to say, I did like this back in 1997 as well. |
|
| 45 | Deana Carter |
| We Danced Anyway1997 | |
Back when I was liking the occasional country song, this was one that came about that followed Deana's breakthru hit Strawberry Wine. Actually, that entire CD was pretty good and contained a lot of hits on the country charts. This is the one song that I still play once in a while. |
|
| 44 | Real McCoy |
| Run Away1995 | |
I LOVED Real McCoy back in 1995 and this song was obviously one of my favourites. I don't think I can express how much I loved their entire CD at the time but I still listen to it every once in a blue moon for retrospective reasons. |
|
| 43 | Dixie Chicks |
| Wide Open Spaces1998 | |
I remember when I first listened to the cassette of this album (lol!), this song jumped out at me right away. It was such a beautiful song and I knew it would be a hit. I think it might have been the biggest hit for them from this album but I'm not positive. Either way, this song is probably generic country music but it's great all the same. |
|
| 42 | Dionne Farris |
| I Know1995 | |
The #1 song of 1995 by probably one of the biggest one-hit-wonders of the 90s. It's weird because I don't think many people can even think of her name and probably just vaguely remember this song but it was one of the biggest hits of the 90s. I guess it is one of those hits that became trapped in its time. It's still quite good though. |
|
| 41 | Black Lab |
| Time Ago1997 | |
An obscure hit from 1997 that I rediscovered in 2004. It was weird for me to include this song on my list considering it pretty much passed under my radar back in 97 but I figured it was only fair to include it on here since it is technically a 90s song, even if most of its attention was achieved by me in the 2000s. |
|
| 40 | Tracy Chapman |
| Give Me One Reason1996 | |
My relationship with this song started off not so great. I really didn't like it when it was a current and then it hit #1 and I was a bit mad. lol. Then I started to listen to it a couple years ago and I realized that this song is really good. This and Fast Car. Just another song to benefit from my shift in musical tastes. |
|
| 39 | Lauryn Hill |
| Doo Wop (That Thing)1998 | |
One of my favourite hip-hop songs of all time, this was Lauryn Hill's first hit as a solo artist. It just has such great flow and Lauryn is so smooth as a rapper and as a vocalist. |
|
| 38 | Blondie |
| Maria1999 | |
I remember when this video came out, I thought Deborah Harry looked hot considering her age. I still think she looked great in this video and the song itself is great. It's rockin' all the way! |
|
| 37 | Cowboy Junkies ![]() |
| Miles From Our Home1998 | |
This song is by a country/pop group that got some videoplay on MuchMusic, MMM and CMT. Looking back now, that surprises me since the video shows two men that appear to be in love, or at least one guy pining after another and it seems like something that would be a big deal now. I remember being confused over the video, lol, because I thought one of the guys was just a really built girl with armpit hair, lol. Either way, this song is awesome. |
|
| 36 | Edwin McCainfeaturing Darius Rucker |
| Solitude1995 | |
While I don't much like Edwin McCain's other stuff, his first single is amazing and almost always brings tears to my eyes. About a mother-son relationship in which the son ends up in jail and by the end of the song, you can totally hear the feelings and emotion in Edwin's voice as he sings the final verse. Incredible song! |
|
| 35 | Tracy Bonham |
| Mother Mother1996 | |
This is a rockin' song too! The chorus is all out! I like it because at first it seems like it'll be just a lighter rock song but then the chorus goes somewhat extreme. |
|
| 34 | Sheryl Crow |
| Everyday Is A Winding Road1996 | |
Sheryl Crow was in her prime in the mid-90s. I wouldn't say this song is her best but I always quite liked it. For me, it was the middle ground from her more rock-based stuff like If It Makes You Happy and her acoustic songs like Strong Enough and it was perfect. |
|
| 33 | Alanis Morissette ![]() |
| You Learn1996 | |
I'm sure everyone remembers Alanismania back in 95/96. This song was nearly in the centre of it and I was pretty much obsessed. It's not my favourite Alanis song now but in trying to apply myself as I am now to myself in 1996, I know I really really loved this song. And the music video, and the live version of the song. It was all awesome! |
|
| 32 | Tragically Hip ![]() |
| Ahead By A Century1996 | |
To me, this song pretty much defines Canadian rock in the 90s. Hearing this song actually brings me back to when I was 12 in the summer of 1996. The video, the opening music, the chorus, everything. I love it! |
|
| 31 | Madonna |
| Ray Of Light1998 | |
One of Madonna's best songs, in my opinion, is Ray Of Light. A great dance song that showcases amazing energy and has a pretty fun video. This song helped to extend her prime into the late 90s and bring her into an electronic direction in which she still remains. |
|
| 30 | Blind Melon |
| No Rain1993 | |
This song is before my time but I obviously remember the music video and still listen to it almost regularly today. I honestly don't know any other songs by Blind Melon but I know I love this one. |
|
| 29 | Alanis Morissette ![]() |
| Ironic1996 | |
Another Alanis song! I think she's represented on this list more than anyone else. And while at times I say that I like You Learn more, I think in the end, it's fair for me to say that Ironic has had the biggest effect on me. Or at least I made a bigger deal over this song as it was pretty much the peak of Alanis' career. When this song was out, she was EVERYWHERE and this song was sitting on top of it all. While I don't listen to this much anymore, I know how I felt about this song back in the day. |
|
| 28 | Hanson |
| MMMBop1997 | |
I know what some of you are thinking but I did like this song when it was out and despite how cheesy Hanson may have been, I think they were legit and they did play their own instruments and write their own songs. It's not their fault they were 11, 13, and 16. You can't expect rocket science in their lyrics. This song was pure fun and it was so catchy. I think it's too bad they aren't considered as credible musicians because I think they were and they achieved a lot despite their age. Great song! |
|
| 27 | Goo Goo Dolls |
| Name1995 | |
The breakthrough hit for the Goo Goo Dolls and deservingly so. This song wasn't really out there in any way in terms of being too loud, too soft, too anything. It was just sort of there, seeping into your brain unknowingly until you finally realize it. I remember thinking that this song was too long but now I understand it. It fits. |
|
| 26 | Sarah McLachlan ![]() |
| Building A Mystery1997 | |
This song launched Sarah's career into international mainstream and then she started Lilith Fair, one of the big musical events of the 90s along with other moving tours like Lollapalooza and others. I don't quite know what it is about this song that I like but I know that I always keep returning to it. There have been times when I considered other songs by Sarah as my favourite by her, like Mary, Adia and Fallen, but in the end, I always come back to this one. |
|
| 25 | Alanis Morissette ![]() |
| Uninvited1998 | |
MORE Alanis! This was her first recording following Jagged Little Pill and I loved it! I think back then it was because of the novelty that was a new Alanis song but now I realize that this song has a simple piano chord that eventually leads into this incredible string section backed by rock drums and it's just so overwelming at times. A highlight of Alanis' songography. |

| 24 | Heart |
| Stranded1990 | |
I didn't know who sang this song that I very occasionally heard on the radio up until I got a compilation greatest hits CD by Heart in early 1998 and while listening to it for the first time, this song came on and I was like "omg! I know this song!" so it immediately became a favourite of mine. I didn't know it was from as recent as it is though, being a 1990 song, which makes it eligable for this chart, lol. |
|
| 23 | Roxette |
| Joyride1991 | |
Another early 90s song that I absolutely love! Me and a cousin of mine actually made a dance routine up for this song and everything, lol. It was an obsession of ours, probably in 1991. I just loved Roxette and this song was definately my favourite by them. |
|
| 22 | Cranberries |
| Ode To My Family1995 | |
I remember really loving this song when it was a current, back when I was really discovering the Cranberries. I don't really know what it was about this song but for me it was just so musically sweet, much moreso than Zombie but I think it's what I definately consider to be my favourite song by the band. |
|
| 21 | Ace Of Base |
| Don't Turn Around1994 | |
For a brief time, Ace of Base were one of the top groups in the world. This particular song is significant to me because it was the new #1 song on the very first Casey's Top 40 that I listened to in the summer of 1994. I also recorded it on my very first mixtape I taped off from the radio so it pretty much became the defining song of the year for me. Very nostalgic in a good way. |
|
| 20 | Soundgarden |
| Black Hole Sun1994 | |
Chris Cornell has one of the best voices in rock music today and this song from Soundgarden pretty much showcases that that was the case back in 1994 as well. One of my favourite rock songs from that day and always something I put in any rockbased playlist I make today still. Awesome! |
|
| 19 | No Doubt |
| Sunday Morning1997 | |
Following everything that happened with Don't Speak, this song pretty much suffered in the shadow of that massive hit but that didn't matter for me because I pretty much played this one out anyway. It was quarky but still fit right in with everything else at the time... or so I thought. |
|
| 18 | Cardigans |
| Lovefool1997 | |
This is just a fun catchy pop song that really doesn't sound like much else from the Cardigans, but they have a very wide range of styles in their music so maybe this song was like everything they did. It was from a period of time when pretty good music was doing well in early 1997 so it's good that this didn't get lost in the batch. |
|
| 17 | Chantal Kreviazuk ![]() |
| God Made Me1997 | |
This song is probably one of the most important songs to ever grace my ears. From the very first time I saw the video, I was captivated. I knew there was something about the song and the voice behind it that I needed to get to know and within a few weeks, I had Chantal's CD. I pretty consider this song to be the turning point of my taste in music to be less based on what radio told me I should listen to and like and basically to start looking beyond that to find something good. It would be over a year before Chantal began to get decent radio airplay and by then, she'd become a well-known favourite by me. And it all started with this song! |
|
| 16 | Pearl Jam |
| Black1994 | |
This song is from their 1991 album but for whatever reason, the radio station I listened to played it in late 1994. I remembered the end of the song and wailing of the guitars enough to want to look for it years later and now I definately consider this song to be one of my favourites of the 90s. I absolutely love the music and how suitable they are to the lyrics. |
|
| 15 | Matchbox Twenty |
| Back 2 Good1998 | |
When you think of a Matchbox Twenty song, chances are, this one won't be at the forefront of your thoughts but it's the one I consider my favourite from the band. I think it really shows so many different sides of the band in terms of having a lighter rock sound but it really picks up in the bridge. For whatever reason, I love that this song is 5:40 long. |
|
| 14 | Mariah Carey |
| Always Be My Baby1996 | |
I think Mariah is definately an important artist for any list of the 90s and pop music. However, when it comes down to an individual song, it's alittle tougher to pick one or a few since she's had so many big hits but to be honest, none of them are really incredible. That is, except for this song. From mid-1996, a great period of music in the 90s and for me personally, this song definately brings back memories and it's a great mid-tempo pop song from Mariah who is absolutely at her best on this recording. |
|
| 13 | Jewel |
| Foolish Games1997 | |
Jewel's first album is surprisingly very amateurish in the production of it, which is surprising because of how successful it was but it came at the height of female pop music in the 90s and the last single from it was this song which was re-recorded to sound more professional for the Batman + Robin soundtrack. I like both the original album version and the radio edit as both have their own individual charm. |
|
| 12 | Madonna |
| Bedtime Story1995 | |
This song, written by Bjork is Madonna at the end of her weird experimental music stage. However weird it is, I think this song is awesome! The odd repetative almost hypnotic music, the beat and Madonna's sexual almost out-of-mind vocals turn this into more than just a song but a moment of ecstacy and pleasure. |
|
| 11 | Sheryl Crow |
| All I Wanna Do1994 | |
This song may have suffered from super-cheesiness but if you can look past that, it's hard to not appreciate this song. It's just a simple song about having fun and it's great to sing along to. A very mid-90s song that definately belongs in any list that shows off the best of the decade. |
|
| 10 | Madonna |
| I'll Remember1994 | |
Madonna's highest song on this chart and it is the one that I would definately call her best. As I've mentioned a lot with songs before, I tend to hold songs that I liked during the dawn of music for me, which was mid 1994, and that's when this song was out. Very 1994 for me and was pretty much my official introduction to Madonna the singer, as opposed to Madonna the cultural icon as I pretty much knew of her as before this. |
|
| #9 | Jann Arden ![]() |
| Could I Be Your Girl1994 | |
Jann Arden's album Living Under June was the first CD that came into my collection courtesy of my sister who liked her. I really liked this song at the time and it continues to pretty much be my favourite song by Jann. It's very poppy, which you realize later isn't typical of Jann who is more known for sombre heartbreak songs. This song is wrapped up in a slightly more positive sounding tune. |
|
| #8 | Chantal Kreviazuk ![]() |
| Feels Like Home1999 | |
I remember buying the Dawson's Creek Soundtrack that this song was from and falling in love with it from the getgo. I listened to it multiple times a day and it became a nightly tradition for me to listen to this song every night before bed, almost as if it was my way of ensuring the next day would be full of luck. I think it was with Feels Like Home when I finally decided that Chantal was my favourite artist, a title that she would keep in my books for about five years after. This song is simple but sometimes, in the right situation, it really can hit home. |
|
| #7 | Counting Crows |
| Mr. Jones1994 | |
I think this song has jumped into classic rock status over the last couple of years. It's pretty much the type of song that belongs next to rock classics from the 80s and 70s along with a few other rock songs on this list but this one was mainstream enough to be heard by the masses and appreciated as just a good ol' fashioned song. Mr. Jones is definately a true classic! I'm glad I was around for it too, lol. Makes me feel alittle old but that's fine. I got to experience a classic in the making anyway. |
|
| #6 | Real McCoy |
| Another Night1995 | |
One of my true obsessions from the 90s was this song by Real McCoy. This was the start of an obsession with their CD of the same name, which was the 6th CD, I believe, in my collection. Looking back on this song and why I liked it, I'm not positive but I do know that I considered Real McCoy as one of the little guys who never really got their due as an artist and I'm always the type of guy to cheer on the little guy. Little did I realize that as a dance act, they really weren't in control of the songs and stuff that they did but were really more of a voice and a face for the people that arranged them behind the scenes which is probably why they got more than their due as musical artists. |
|
| #5 | No Doubt |
| Don't Speak1997 | |
Another one of the big songs from the 90s, I do think it's really hard to top a song like this and like some of the other songs in the Top 10, this was one that I became obsessed with for a time. Luckily despite all the airplay and all the times I heard this song, I never really got sick of it. Hearing it today is still a breath of fresh air sound waves from the opening chords until the "hush hush darling". Gwen was at her best here. |
|
| #4 | Stone Temple Pilots |
| Interstate Love Song1994 | |
It's weird for me to place this song above some of the others considering I wouldn't consider myself a fan of the Stone Temple Pilots nor do I really know much about them but this song is backed by the fact that it's from my previously mentioned (many times) "dawn of music", and it's a straight forward rock song. One of the songs that I can listen to on super high volume and take in every note, every sound, every word and enjoy every single second of it. One qualm I have with this song in fact is that it's much too short. When it ends, I'm always surprised because it feels like there should be one more verse. |
|
| #3 | Chantal Kreviazuk ![]() |
| Surrounded1997 | |
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was February 1997 when I first got Chantal's CD and this was track #2, it immediately jumped out at me. The opening piano, the first lyrics and Chantal's saddened voice were a killer combination to what would go on to become an incredibly emotional song. I didn't really like the video as I thought Chantal's hair looked bad in it but it didn't really effect how I felt about the song. I'm glad it was the one to put Chantal out there as a popular singer. |
|
| #2 | Melissa Etheridge |
| Come To My Window1994 | |
I loved this song at the time but not really to the point that I love it now. There's something about Melissa Etheridge that really shows that she can rock when she wants to and this song is truly one of those times. I actually wrote a paper on this song for my Rock'n Roll Music class about how this song was a huge step for women in rock music as well as gay people in pop music in general. Melissa overcame a lot of opsticles for this song to become a hit, or at least you'd think she did considering what had happened, or had never happened before this song came out. An incredible song and Melissa hits every line with perfection! |
|
| #1 | Alanis Morissette ![]() |
| You Oughta Know1995 | |
I don't know how expected this song was for #1 but I know it surprised me alittle. If I had made this list even as recently as last year, I don't think this song would be on top. I always liked it but it was never really the song that made me love Alanis, despite it being her breakthrough song and all. But just seeing just how much of an effect You Oughta Know had on the music industry in general made me really see just how powerful the song was on so many levels. And my appreciation for this song has grown much more for myself over the last couple of years anyway as I started listening to it a bit more than I did ten years ago. I think Alanis really hits a nerve with this song and she really shows what she's made of, especially in the final chorus with the line "and everytime I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it." I think that line in particular really says it all for this song. Alanis nails it! |
