The grasp that new artists have on the chart continues this week as Lucinda Williams jumps 26-1* this week with Are You Alright? I should specify that by "new", I don't mean artists that are new but artists that are having their first hit on The Max. Lucinda's song is her first Max appearance as was last week's chart topper Regina Spektor and the one before, the Decemberists.
Speaking of Lucinda's jump to #1, it makes a huge move from #26 to top the chart this week. Now, I wrote about this late last year when another song had a significant move to the top but unfortunately I don't have it. What I can suggest is that Lucinda is in good company and as of now, in fourth place for the biggest. The others include Lauryn Hill who jumped 27-1 with Doo Wop (That Thing). Last year, KT Tunstall jumped 28-1 with Other Side Of The World. But the record holder more than likely goes to Nelly Furtado who moved 43-1 with Try back in 2004.
Last week, I reported about Lucinda Williams having the second highest entry in the Top 100 for 2007. Well, both her and David Usher have been passed by this week's highest debut which is the third single from Ghost Stories, the fourth album by Chantal Kreviazuk. Ghosts Of You leaps in at #9 this week, marking the year's highest entry. It is NOT, however, Chantal's highest entry, not by a long shot! She's had a total of six songs debut inside the Top 10. Aside from Ghosts Of You, in 2002, In This Life entered at #2. And four of her songs have debuted at #1, Feels Like Home (1999), Before You (1999), Dear Life (2000) and Wonderful (2006). Also worth mentioning is that with this week's entry from Chantal, it ties her with Alanis Morissette and the Dixie Chicks as the artist with the most Top 40 hits. More about that next:
A song from the movie Shut Up And Sing was released as a single to iTunes last month and as a result, is eligable to chart on The Max chart. It's the latest single from the Dixie Chicks but isn't from their album. The Neighbor enters the Top 40 to become the trio's 18th Top 40 single, which puts them in a tie with Alanis Morissette and Chantal Kreviazuk for the most Top 40 hits. Overall, it's their 22nd Top 100 Max single, which actually ties them with Nelly and Madonna for the most songs to chart in the history of The Max. It's interesting that there's a three-way tie between a solo male artist, a solo female artist and a group! However, the Chicks have a distinction of having all 22 of their songs be ones in which they were lead on and not featured artists as both Madonna, who was a featured artist on one hit, and Nelly, featured on three, have.
The Arcade Fire entered the Canadian album chart at #1, the US album chart at #2 and had the #3 album in the world this week with Neon Bible. Their reign as the top band of 2007 is definately possible and this week, their song Keep The Car Running earns the Biggest Riser title for the second week in a row. The song jumps 40-4* with its sights on #1. The song is the band's first Top 10 appearance. The closest they previously came was with Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out) back in 2006.
