Max Speak

It's the week of Maroon 5 as the band makes a strong return to the album chart with IT Won't Be Soon Before Long. The album features the hit Makes Me Wonder which advances to #1 this week, giving the quartet their second #1 single after This Love (2004). The album also follows Songs About Jane to become their second chart topping CD after the first spent four weeks there back in 2004.
Chartwise, Maroon 5 becomes the third artist in a row to simultaneously top both the singles and the album chart following Brandi Carlile and Serena Ryder. In addition, their album goes Gold in only its first week out, making it the fourth CD to do so so far in 2007 following David Usher (who went Platinum his first week), Arcade Fire and under the old points system, Jann Arden and Fall Out Boy both went Gold. When an album goes Gold under The Max certifications, it means that it has received a total of 50+ plays on my personal iTunes. However, that also takes into account play from all singles pre-album-release. In the case of Maroon 5, Makes Me Wonder had already gone Gold and thus received 25+ plays so they were already halfway there before the album was released. For comparison purposes, David Usher's The Music had received about 40 plays when Strange Birds was released so he got an additional 60 plays from the album that week compared to Maroon 5's approximately 25.

Melissa McClelland earns her third Top 10 from Thumbelina's One Night Stand as she moves 11-8 with Greg Keelor on Skyway Bridge. Still a ways to go before it can match the peak of her previous single Passenger 24 but in only her third week on, she's off to a great start.

While country music has never been a major genre of music to succeed on The Max, there have been a fair share of country artists to have significant hits over the years including the obvious Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Lonestar, Lee Ann Womack and Leann Rimes. But there's also Adam Gregory, the Wilkinsons, Jo Dee Messina and Trisha Yearwood to have the occasional hit as well.
Of course, the big name in country music on The Max is the Dixie Chicks. They hold a number of chart feats including, but not limited to, Group with the most charting singles (they have 22), Artist with the most Gold singles (6 since tracking began last October) as well as most Gold albums (this week they earn their 5th which puts them in a 4-way tie with Alanis Morissette, Our Lady Peace and David Usher). In addition to all of that, they've had four #1 hits and the #1 song of 2006 with Not Ready To Make Nice. This week, The Neighbour moves 5-4* and is the week's highest charting song by a country artist. However, there are two others inside the Top 20 which is more than usual. The Wreckers fall 6-12 with Tennessee and Carrie Underwood zooms up 26-17* with her second chart hit Before He Cheats.

Speaking of chart records, last week Madonna entered the Top 100 with her charity single Hey You. This week, that song sits alongside Hey U by the Basement Jaxx. They are #78 and #77 respectively. When that song entered the chart, it pushed Madonna ahead of Nelly and the Dixie Chicks as the artist with the most Max Chart singles. Hey You becomes her 23rd chart appearance thus putting her in the lead all by herself. Madonna was on the first charts back when The Max began in 1998 with Frozen being a #1 hit.

This week, Avril Lavigne and Blue October both fall out of the Top 40 BUT both also replace themselves by entering as well, which is certainly a chart first for the Top 40. When You're Gone moves 54-31* while She's My Ride Home jumps 62-39*.
