Every once in a while, a songwriter will come along with the ability to grab hold of a particular genre and turn it on its head by presenting a whole new perspective to the tried and true. In a different time, Brandy Clark would be redefining modern-day country music with her sharp lyrics that have just enough bite to still be clean and crisp.

Brandy’s songwriting isn’t full of euphemisms. That would be too easy. Instead she sticks with tradition and extends beyond the expected by delicately painting a portrait that is still on point with subject matter like adultery, revenge and an ode to getting high.

Kacey Musgraves – Same Trailer Different Park

I’m late on the Kacey Musgraves train. Really late.

Same Trailer Different Park came out nearly a year ago and has since made it all over 2013’s critics’ best of lists, and it won the Grammy for Country Album of the Year.

My first exposure to Kacey came when Follow Your Arrow was the iTunes Free Song of the Week in October. Its progressive themes instantly differentiated the song and her from most country music artists and coupling that with the recognition she was receiving, I knew I was missing out on something.

Grammy nominations: How did I do (2013-14 edition)


The nominations are in for the 56th Grammy Awards. Jay-Z leads the pack with nine nominations followed by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams, who have seven each.

Prior to the nominations announcement last night, I predicted who would make each of the Big 4 categories of Album, Record and Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Let’s see how I did:
